['lɪpskəm], William Nunn, amerikanischer Physikochemiker, * Cleveland (Ohio) 9. 12. 1919; 1950-59 Professor in Minneapolis (Minnesota), seit 1959 an der Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts); befasste sich v. a. mit der Röntgenstrukturanalyse niedermolekularer Verbindungen und lieferte wichtige Beiträge zur Technik der Kristallzüchtung. Bei seinen Arbeiten über die Borane (Borverbindungen), deren stereochemischer Aufbau er erstmals theoretisch deuten konnte, erbrachte er den Beweis für das Vorhandensein der »Dreizentrenbindung«. Für diese Arbeiten erhielt Lipscomb 1976 den Nobelpreis für Chemie.
